Cows eat chicory flowers

I posted a photo of chicory flowers the other day just before I moved the herd in. When chicory gets to this stage the stems become fibrous and far less palatable to the cows. A day later I moved the herd out of here and on to the next paddock, which lets you see whatContinueContinue reading “Cows eat chicory flowers”

Just singing and fencing in the rain

Wet soils mean you can push in fence posts. Here Robert is holding a cut down vine post so I can push it in with the loader. I like the look of impending doom on his face, although he breaks into a smile when he sees the camera is focused on him. There’s something rewardingContinueContinue reading “Just singing and fencing in the rain”

3 x entrecôte = fore rib roast

The butcher made us six rib roasts for our customers. That’s a fore rib roast to the Brits and a standing rib roast to the Americans. [Note that some Americans with lovely Southern accents give ‘rib’ two syllables.] In French terms, this is a roast made from the entrecôte of the animal. Young beef, get out of my pan

For those interested, here are the numbers from the recent veal/young beef. It had a carcass weight of 154kg at a little over 7 months. From that carcass the butcher made 108kg of cuts, a rendering of 70%. Note that the cuts include the jarret which includes the shin bone thus adding to the weight.ContinueContinue reading “Young beef, get out of my pan”

Cold morning cows and kids

While waiting for the school bus, the kids and I play Red Light, Green Light. The first person to see theContinueContinue reading “Cold morning cows and kids”

Mirandaise cows on a tidy small farm

I visited a local farmer who has some Limousine and Mirandaise cows. He has a small farm and keeps a herd of about fifteen cows. He used to run goats on the farm to make enough money from his twenty hectares but he’s retiring now and selling his place and winding down the livestock numbers.ContinueContinue reading “Mirandaise cows on a tidy small farm”

A great farm with one unfortunate problem

This was a farm that ticked all the boxes. It had plenty of land, over a hundred hectares. The house was just large enough and was in the middle of the farm. The barn was big and modern. It was used in an extensive grazing system with Gascon cows and came with a small herdContinueContinue reading “A great farm with one unfortunate problem”
