My family is from New Zealand. I was born there way back in the last millennium but felt the pull of the bright lights and moved off to Australia when I was 18 months old. One thing from New Zealand that is worth knowing about is the Swanndri, This is a big heavy woven woolContinueContinue reading “Thank you for the Swanndri, anonymous New Zealander”

First thing in the morning
Two first-calf heifers and five calves. There may be some confusion here.
All Enzo’s calves are black
We started using Angus bulls a few years ago. It’s the number one cow breed for grass-fed beef so we wanted to give it a try. We started with Angus bulls and have now added a set of Angus cows to the herd so we get some Angus-Salers cross calves and some pure Angus calves.ContinueContinue reading “All Enzo’s calves are black”
Watersliding Moles
Walking through the Yukon pasture the other day I heard the sound of running water under the ground. Now we have limestone bedrock on the farm which is porous and can get underground streams but this was too close to the surface to be anything major. There was a molehill there near the source ofContinueContinue reading “Watersliding Moles”
Cows eat chicory flowers
I posted a photo of chicory flowers the other day just before I moved the herd in. When chicory gets to this stage the stems become fibrous and far less palatable to the cows. A day later I moved the herd out of here and on to the next paddock, which lets you see whatContinueContinue reading “Cows eat chicory flowers”
Chicory flowers brighten my morning
Chicory grows wild here in SW France. Earlier in the season the cows love it but in the height of summer the stems get too fibrous for ideal eating. Pretty, though.
Heifer Good Weekend
This is a set of heifers that are fattening up over the next few months. Most are dairy crosses but they’re all great at eating grass. We have a few paddocks set aside for them and they rotate through every 5 or 6 weeks eating fresh grass every day and putting on weight fast. IContinueContinue reading “Heifer Good Weekend”
spring growth with wild pea and some new angus cows
Spring is my favorite time of the year. There are new calves running around, weather is getting warmer and the grass looks super green. The legume here looks like some kind of wild pea. We have some new cows that are enjoying the shade of the Triangle paddock. They are a mix of Angus heifersContinueContinue reading “spring growth with wild pea and some new angus cows”
At long last, a cow photo
This hay-loving cow is Itsy Bitsy. The paddock they are on has a bit too much agrostis so I’m feeding a bit of hay there to push down the agrostis and allow the taller grasses to push through. Itsy’s neighbor got annoyed at her antics ang gave her a little headbutt. Cows have a veryContinueContinue reading “At long last, a cow photo”
Visiting some heifers in the Aveyron
I went to the Aveyron to see a man about some cows. It is great when you visit someone’s house and look out the window and see things like this: Since it was all about the cows and not the architechture, here is a photo of one of the heifers I bought. She’s two andContinueContinue reading “Visiting some heifers in the Aveyron”
